The myths and legends Ibiza hides: The most magical stories await you

If there's a place in the world overflowing with myths and legends, it’s the Mediterranean sea. We’ve been gathering all the stories of Ibiza so you know where to find the most magical spots.
The mysteries of Ibiza stem from the island’s fascinating history, owing to its strategic location that led civilizations to sail the Mediterranean, settle, and leave their mark over the centuries. Moreover, the myths and legends of Ibiza have survived and thrived through a rich oral tradition, passed down as living legacies from generation to generation.
So you see, Ibiza is not just synonymous with parties; it's a land of enchantment, where tales of pirates, hermits, magical islands, goblins, and mythical beings transport you to another time. Come immerse yourself in Ibiza's mysterious, hidden corners—you won’t regret it!
Where the rondaies, legends of Ibiza, roam the island
The rondaies are the local legends of Ibiza, a collection of fascinating Ibizan tales that recount the feats of fantastic creatures who have left their mark on the island. We’ve gathered some of these magical beings’ tales—shall we explore the stories of Ibiza together?
Fameliars
These small creatures, often described as ugly and extremely thin, are tireless workers. However, when they have nothing to do, they start causing trouble, constantly demanding more tasks and food. Ever heard the phrase, “the devil makes work for idle hands”?
To capture a fameliar, you must wait by the old bridge over the Santa Eulalia river, on St. John's Eve, where a glowing flower appears at midnight. If you pick that flower and place it in a bottle with holy water, you'll soon have a fameliar.
Barruguets
With elongated heads and astonishing strength, barruguets are mischievous little beings. Although they can transform into any animal, their favourite form is that of a goat. This is fitting, as they are known for their playful mischief, such as adding too much salt to food or waking up babies to make them cry.
During storms, you might spot barruguets among the waves, tumbling in the water and bathing in the sea foam.
Follets
Are they goblins or entities that possess people? There’s no clear consensus, but in Ibiza, it's believed that restless children may be under the influence of a follet. These beings dwell among stones, pine trees, and the sea, and are said to be more visible to the innocent, especially children.
Crespells
In Ibiza, rather than scaring children with the boogeyman, people speak of the crespells. Ugly, wrinkled, and covered in warts, these creatures live in Sa Cova des Crespells, a cave in Buscastell. Their appearance is terrifying, and stories about them are shared to frighten the little ones.
Whether seen as curious beings or fearsome monsters, tales of the crespells are still told on the island of Ibiza today!
Es Vedrà: epicentre of myths and legends in Ibiza
Among all the stunning places in Ibiza, Es Vedrà stands out as the source of the island’s most famous legends, and perhaps even some of the greatest in all of Europe. This mystical islet has been the setting for stories about UFOs, sirens, magnetic anomalies, and incredible Ibizan tales that continue to spark the imagination.
Goddess Tanit, Ibiza’s ode to fertility at Es Vedrà
Civilizations such as the Phoenicians and Carthaginians worshipped Goddess Tanit in Ibiza. As the goddess of fertility, her power is said to reside on the islet of Es Vedrà. Even today, popular tradition invites women seeking to become mothers to visit this mystical islet in search of her blessing.
The Triangle of Silence
While less comforting than the presence of Goddess Tanit, Ibiza has its own version of the famous Bermuda Triangle: the Triangle of Silence. This mysterious area, said to encompass Es Vedrà, the southwest coast of Mallorca, and the Peñón de Ifach in Alicante, is a well-known Ibiza legend. It is notorious for disrupting navigational instruments, leaving sailors and pilots puzzled.
UFOs and the Manises case
On November 11, 1979, TAE flight JK-297 was flying over Es Vedrà when the pilots spotted several strange red lights heading directly toward the plane. The lights moved at speeds impossible for any aircraft and violated basic safety protocols, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing at Manises airport in Valencia. This incident, known as the Manises Case, remains one of Ibiza's most famous mysteries.
Extreme magnetism
Es Vedrà is believed to be one of the most magnetic points on the planet, yet there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. The islet’s rocky formation is pure limestone, with no known magnetic properties. Still, this legend endures through the oral tradition that Ibiza preserves today.
Sirens and the tip of Atlantis
According to Homer, Es Vedrà was home to the mermaids or sirens who tried to seduce Ulysses in The Odyssey. Many also believe this mystical islet marks the tip of the mythical city of Atlantis. Although the submerged city has never been found—despite many attempts—ships still tend to avoid the area, just in case any of Ibiza's legends prove to be true.
As you can see, Ibiza has much more to offer than just beaches and parties. It's an island full of magic, mystery, and fascinating Ibizan tales that reveal themselves only to those who dare to explore.
Are you ready to dive into a real-life experience of Ibiza’s stories? To fully embrace the magic, there's nothing better than staying at the best resorts in Ibiza, the perfect base from which to explore this real-life paradise. After all, Ibiza’s beauty is not a legend; it’s an undeniable truth!
