Experience the island

Ibiza is a destination that evokes images of sun, music, and endless beaches. But beyond its famous coastline, the island hides a more serene and mystical side, guarded by imposing structures that have guided sailors for centuries. We're talking about the lighthouses of Ibiza, authentic sentinels of the Mediterranean that not only serve a vital function but also offer some of the most spectacular landscapes and views in Ibiza.

If you're looking for a different adventure, a plan that takes you away from the crowds and connects you with the purest and wildest beauty of the Ibizan coast, a tour of Ibiza's charming lighthouses is the perfect choice. Get ready to discover a perspective of the island that few know, and one of the best driving routes in Ibiza.

Lighthouses of Ibiza: guardians of the Mediterranean

The lighthouses of Ibiza are much more than simple light beacons. They are symbols of the history of Ibiza's lighthouses, silent witnesses to the passage of time, and reference points that offer the best viewpoints in Ibiza. Located at the most extreme points of the coast, these giants of engineering rise on cliffs and headlands, providing panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. Each lighthouse has its own personality and its own story, which makes visiting them a unique and fascinating experience. Discover the most important lighthouses of Ibiza!

  1. Faro de Botafoc: the icon of Ibiza town

The Faro de Botafoc is, without a doubt, the most iconic and accessible lighthouse on the island. Situated on the islet that bears its name, on the north side of the entrance to the Port of Ibiza, its presence is a fundamental element of the city's landscape. Its name, which in Catalan means "leaping fire," refers to the ancient practice of sailors lighting bonfires for orientation.

It was inaugurated in November 1861 and was one of the first in the Balearic Islands to be electrified in 1918. Its design, with two-story dwellings for the lighthouse keepers due to space scarcity, demonstrates a curious adaptation of architecture to necessity. The proximity of the Faro de Botafoc to the marina makes it a landmark for the luxury yachts arriving on the island. From its location, you can enjoy privileged views of the old town of Dalt Vila, the port, and the vibrant city of Ibiza.

  1. Faro des Moscarter: the tallest lighthouse in the Balearics

At the northern tip of Ibiza, near Portinatx, stands the impressive Faro des Moscarter. At 52 meters tall, it is the highest lighthouse tower in all the Balearic Islands, and its distinctive black and white spiral stripe makes it an emblematic and unique image. Inaugurated in 1978, it rises 41 meters above sea level, crowning a majestic cliff.

The history of Ibiza's lighthouses tells us that its construction was an engineering challenge due to the rugged terrain. Today, the route to get there is one of the most rewarding on the island. To see it, it only takes about a 20-minute walk along the coast from Es Portixol beach in Portinatx, making this walk one of the best options for hiking at Ibiza's lighthouses.

  1. Faro de sa Conillera: the sentinel of the west

Much older than the previous one, the Faro de sa Conillera is a silent giant guarding the west coast of Ibiza. Located on the islet of the same name, it began operating in 1857, being the second lighthouse built in Ibiza and Formentera. Unlike the Faro des Moscarter, its tower is situated in the center of a circular building where the lighthouse keepers' dwellings were located.

Sa Conillera is part of the Natural Reserves of Es Vedrà, Es Vedranell, and the Western Islets. Although it can only be accessed with a special permit or on organized excursions, its white silhouette is an essential postcard in all the sunsets at Ibiza's lighthouses enjoyed from Portmany Bay.

  1. Faro de Es Vedrà: the most enigmatic lighthouse on the island

Few people know that on the iconic islet of Es Vedrà there was a lighthouse. It is one of the most unknown on the island due to its remote location on the north face of the islet. Inaugurated in 1927, it was rebuilt in 1959 after a storm and has maintained its current location ever since. It is also one of the most sober and smallest lighthouses, but its spectacular setting makes it truly attractive. Es Vedrà is itself a nature reserve, with endemic species of flora and fauna, such as the vedranera lizard. A mystical and beautiful place that contributes to the islet's legend.

  1. Faro de Tagomago: nature and sunrise views

To the northeast of Ibiza, on the island of Tagomago, is this lighthouse that shares its name. It is a crucial landmark for naval routes from Ibiza to Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona. It can only be accessed by sea, but the visit is worth it. The island of Tagomago is a rocky enclave, designated as a Natural Area of Special Interest and a Special Protection Area for Birds. It offers a setting of unparalleled nature and rest, as well as providing spectacular sunrises. Its robust presence on this uninhabited islet is a true scenic treasure.

  1. Faro dels Penjats: the "island of the hanged" lighthouse

Located on the "Island of the Hanged" (dels Penjats), very close to the Port of Ibiza, the Faro dels Penjats was inaugurated in 1856. Its construction was due to the danger this area posed to sailors. Given the harsh living conditions that the lighthouse keepers and their families, the sole inhabitants of this small islet, had to endure, it was the first lighthouse to be automated, leaving the island uninhabited in 1929. This lighthouse is an example of the sacrifice of lighthouse keepers and the evolution of technology at sea.

  1. Faro de Ses Coves Blanques: the rest lighthouse

Located on the coast of Ses Variades, the Faro de Ses Coves Blanques indicated the entrance to the Port of Sant Antoni. Inaugurated in 1897, this lighthouse is now an exhibition center for the Sant Antoni de Portmany town hall. What makes it special is that, for lighthouse keepers, it represented a longed-for destination. It was considered a "rest" lighthouse because its operation was not very difficult and it was located near healthcare and religious services. For this reason, only keepers over 50 years old who also had physical difficulties that made working at more demanding lighthouses difficult were assigned here.

A tour of Ibiza's lighthouses: a plan for adventurers

To explore the lighthouses of Ibiza at your own pace, the best option is to create a route and have a vehicle. Driving routes in Ibiza allow you to reach the starting points of the hikes and move freely between the different lighthouses. Hiking at Ibiza's lighthouses makes special sense here, whether with an easy walk to the Faro de Botafoc or a more demanding trek to the Faro des Moscarter.

Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, water, and a camera, because the viewpoints in Ibiza you'll find along the way are spectacular. The history of Ibiza's lighthouses is fascinating, and you can discover it at each of these sites. Live the experience of a different plan that will show you a wilder and more authentic Ibiza.
